« The post-conflict status that never arrives: Arrested futurity as Lebanese meta narrative »
This presentation focuses on Lebanon and its meta historic narrative of war and peace, destruction, and construction. Here I make the case that Lebanese ruling elites rehash visions of prosperous futurity that emphasise that Lebanon is a “post-conflict” country. They extend the breadth of the future in media representations and productions as they shape the conditions for an unviable future because of their corruption and authoritarianism. I call this logic of governance “arrested futurity”. Empirically, I draw on interviews with Lebanese artists and intellectuals, who are left to pick up the pieces and fill in the blanks of a troubled collective memory, as well as on bank advertisements, TV promotional clips, and news editorials.
